College Basketball Preview, The Sports Network, 11th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers Face Iowa Hawkeyes in Big Ten Opener

Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - The 11th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers and Iowa Hawkeyes dive into Big Ten play this evening, as they meet up at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
The Hoosiers come in with plenty of momentum, having won seven straight games and 11 of their first 12 to start the season. The team closed out the non- conference portion of its schedule last weekend with a 97-59 rout of Chicago State.
The Hawkeyes have experienced ups and downs this year, hovering just over .500 with a 7-6 record. Iowa had lost two straight games, but closed out the calendar year with a 57-50 win over SE Louisiana.Indiana holds a significant edge in the all-time series (91-68), but Iowa has won five of the last six meetings.
The Hawkeyes hold a slim 40-38 advantage in games played in Iowa City.
The Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in several categories, including scoring (83.3 ppg), scoring margin (+21.2), free-throw percentage (.755) and rebounding margin (+10.7). Kelvin Sampson's team has plenty of scoring depth, with four players currently averaging double digits. It all starts with freshman sensation Eric Gordon. The 6-4 youngster has been phenomenal in the early going, shooting .482 from the floor and .437 from behind the arc, leading to a whopping 23.4 ppg. D.J. White gives the team an inside presence with a near double-double average of 16.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Jordan Crawford and Armon Bassett have made their presence felt as well, with 14.0 and 11.4 ppg, respectively. In the lopsided win over Chicago State, Gordon was just 3-of-12 from the floor, but made up for it by hitting all 14 of his free- throw attempts, to finish with 22 points. White posted a huge double-double of 21 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, followed by Crawford, who came off the bench to tally 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and five steals in 25 minutes of work.
There is little chance of Iowa hanging with Indiana in a shootout, as the Hawkeyes come into league play averaging a plebeian 57.7 ppg. The team has certainly struggled with its shot (.430) and has been prone to making mistakes, with 17.2 turnovers per contest. The majority of the scoring comes from Justin Johnson (14.7 ppg) and Tony Freeman (13.0 ppg), although Freeman has just three games under his belt. The scoring pool dries up after that, with the next player on the scoring list, Jake Kelly, adding just 7.5 ppg to the cause. The Hawkeyes have been able to stay afloat, with solid defensive play, holding foes under 40 percent shooting (.382) and 55.3 ppg. It was another strong defensive effort in the win over SE Louisiana, as Iowa held its opponent to .429 shooting, while forcing 20 turnovers. Freeman led four Hawkeyes in double figures with 15 points off the bench. Johnson, Cyrus Tate and J.R. Angle chipped in with 10 points apiece.
