College Basketball Preview, The Sports Network, Top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels Welcome Kent State Golden Flashes to Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels open up the 2008 portion of their schedule as they welcome the Kent State Golden Flashes to Chapel Hill for non-conference play.
Roy Williams' squad has certainly looked the part of a national title favorite, winning all 13 of its games thus far, including closing out the calendar year with a 90-58 whipping of Valparaiso last weekend. The Heels will open up ACC play after this game, traveling to Clemson this weekend to take on the Tigers.
The Golden Flashes are off to a fast start as well, winning 10 of their first 12 games. KSU brings a seven-game win streak into this contest after posting an 84-69 win over Cleveland State this past weekend.
UNC has won both previous matchups with Kent State, but the two teams have not met since 1978.
Kent State is not a flashy offensive unit. The team is shooting a respectable .479 from the floor overall, but it has led to just 71.8 ppg. Mike Scott is the most productive player on the roster, leading the team in scoring (14.7 ppg) as well as rebounding (6.9 rpg). Al Fisher is the only other team member with a double-digit scoring average (11.5 ppg), although Haminn Quaintance (9.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg) has certainly contributed as well. In the 15-point win over Cleveland State, the Golden Flashes hit a season-high 11 three-pointers and opened the game with a crushing 23-9 run. Quaintance and Scott led the way with 17 points apiece. Fisher added a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, while Chris Singletary came off the bench to chip in 10 points.
The Flashes will need to shoot the ball extremely well again this evening, if they are to keep things close with the Tar Heels. North Carolina is one of the top offensive teams in the country, shooting 50.1 percent from the floor, while netting 92.4 ppg. The scoring depth is vast, led by the play of All- American forward Tyler Hansbrough. The 6-9 junior is averaging a near double- double, pacing the team in both scoring (22.2 ppg) and rebounding (9.8 rpg). The backcourt duo of Wayne Ellington (16.7 ppg) and Ty Lawson (12.7
ppg, 5.3 apg) presents a perfect complement to Hansbrough's interior game. Danny Green is a key component as well, coming off the bench for most of the season, adding 13.2 ppg. Hansbrough scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Tar Heels to a rout over the Crusaders this past weekend. With the effort, he picked up his fourth ACC Player of the Week award this season. Green matched his career-high with 20 points off the bench, followed by fellow reserve Will Graves (14 pts) and Deon Thompson (11 pts, 8 rebs). Ellington struggled a bit, hitting just 2-of-10 from the floor and finishing with five points. However, the Tar Heels showed that they can certainly thrive with serious depth on the roster.
