College Basketball Preview, The Sports Network, Pittsburgh Panthers Seeks Quick Turnaround Against Lafayette Leopards
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Lafayette Leopards will attempt to upset the 13th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers on the road tonight in a non-conference clash.
Lafayette carried a three-game win streak into its meeting with Robert Morris on Sunday, but that game resulted in an 88-76 defeat.
The Leopards are still a solid 8-4 overall this season, with 4-2 marks both at home and on the road.
Pittsburgh opened the season with 11 consecutive wins, including an overtime victory over Duke. Unfortunately, the undefeated streak came to a halt on Saturday with an 80-55 loss to Dayton on the road. Pitt enters this evening's clash with an 8-0 home record. The Panthers have won 15 of their 21 all-time meetings with the Leopards.
Lafayette is scoring 78.8 ppg this season while allowing 73.8 ppg to the opposition. The top offensive performer for the Leopards is Andrew Brown, as he is netting 18.3 ppg on the strength of his stellar 48.4 percent shooting from three-point range. Bilal Abdullah is the only other double-digit scorer in the lineup, as he checks in with 12.9 ppg. Brown scored 21 points and dished out five assists against Robert Morris on Sunday, but that effort simply wasn't enough to avoid defeat. As for Abdullah, he exceeded his average scoring output with 16 points, but he finished with only one assist and six turnovers. The Leopards turned the ball over 19 times and suffered a 42-33 rebounding disadvantage.
Sam Young scored 15 points for Pittsburgh against Dayton, and Levance Fields pitched in 13 points. Clearly, however, the Panthers played their worst game of the season. They connected on only 29.7 percent of their field goal attempts, including a miserable 3-of-25 effort from three-point range. They finished with a mere seven assists as well and permitted the Flyers to shoot 52 percent from the floor. Obviously, Pitt is much better than it showed in that tilt. The Panthers are netting 78.4 ppg this season while limiting opponents to 60.8 ppg on 38.9 percent shooting from the field, including 28.8 percent from three- point range. Strong rebounding has certainly been key to the club's success, as it is pulling down 9.7 rpg more than the opposition on average. Young is the top offensive performer for the squad, as he is netting 17.5 ppg on 53.1 percent field goal efficiency, including 46.7 percent from behind the arc. Young is also an 80 percent shooting from the foul line and is pulling down 7.3 rpg. Fields adds 11.9 ppg, and he has dished out 65 assists against 23 turnovers.
