College Basketball Preview, The Sports Network, Fifth-ranked UCLA Bruins begins Pac-10 play at 24th-ranked Stanford Cardinal

Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - The fifth-ranked UCLA Bruins begin defense of their Pac-10 title, as they open up league play on the road, taking on 24th- ranked Stanford at Maples Pavilion.
The Bruins have won five straight games and closed out both the calendar year and their non-conference schedule with a 76-48 thrashing of UC-Davis last weekend.
The Cardinal also come into league play with plenty of momentum.
Thanks to a seven-game win streak that includes last weekend's 55-48 victory over Fresno State, Stanford finds itself back in the top-25.
UCLA holds a 127-89 edge in a series that dates back to the 1924-25 season, but it has been Stanford which has had the upper hand of late, winning seven of the last 10 meetings.
Last season, these two teams split a pair of games, each winning on its home floor.
The Bruins closed out the 2007 portion of their schedule with a rather easy victory over UC Davis.
UCLA shot a solid .532 from the floor in the game, including .630 in the second half.
In addition, the team outrebounded UC Davis 31-16 and forced 21 turnovers.
Four Bruins scored in double figures, led by Darren Collison's 14 points.
Kevin Love just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Josh Shipp chipped in with 10 points apiece.
The Bruins have thrived at both ends of the court this season and the result is an impressive +21.5 scoring margin.
UCLA is shooting a healthy .489 from the floor and putting up 75.2 ppg, while limiting foes to just 53.8 ppg on .396 shooting.
With a +10.9 rebounding edge and forcing 16.6 turnovers per outing, this is a team with very few weaknesses.
Love has been one of the nation's top big men, despite the fact that he is just a freshman.
The 6-10, 270-pounder is averaging a double-double, leading the team in both scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (10.2 rpg).
The scoring pool is deep with four others boasting double-figure averages in Shipp (14.4 ppg), Collison (12.7 ppg), Russell Westbrook (11.5 ppg) and Mbah a Moute (10.1 ppg).
The Cardinal are a lot like the Bruins in that they have been able to shoot the ball well (.488) and put up points (75.0 ppg), while also shutting down the opposition, allowing just 56.1 ppg on .388 shooting.
Another area which Stanford mirrors UCLA is in the frontcourt, where the team has a pair of big men in brothers Brook Lopez and Robin Lopez handling things.
The two seven- footers certainly are the primary reason Stanford is outrebounding its foes by 11.3 rebounds per game. Brook Lopez is just getting back to work and has played in just three games this season due to academic reasons.
Still, the early returns are in and he is a dominant frontcourt player, averaging 19.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game thus far.
He got his first start of the season against Fresno State last week and made the most of it, recording a double- double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
His brother Robin handles things in the middle, averaging 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while leading the team with 31 blocks.
Anthony Goods provides aerial support, netting almost 13 points per game (12.8), while delivering on over 40 percent from behind the arc (29- of-71).
Goods poured in 16 points in the win over the Bulldogs last week.
