NHL Hockey Preview, The Sports Network, New York Rangers Make Rare Stop in Calgary Against the Calgary Flames
(Sports Network) - The New York Rangers will make a visit to Calgary tonight for the first time in just over four years, as they battle the Flames at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Calgary hasn't hosted the Rangers since a 2-1 loss on November 14, 2002. The clubs have played twice in New York since, splitting those meetings. Overall, the Rangers have won five of the last seven meetings and two straight in Calgary after going winless in 13 games there.
The Blueshirts enter this test on a three-game winning streak after downing Montreal, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday. Brendan Shanahan's goal 1:06 into the extra session lifted New York.
The goal came off a turnover in the neutral zone, as Chris Drury corralled the puck and hit Shanahan in full stride as he steamed over the blue line. The veteran forward then went in alone and, with a quick release, snapped the puck over Cristobal Huet's left shoulder.
Drury ended with a goal and an assist, while Jaromir Jagr and Dan Girardi also tallied for New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 18 saves in the victory, and Scott Gomez had a pair of assists.
For Gomez, it extended his point streak to 12 games, the longest active run in the NHL. He has four goals and 13 assists over the streak, and leads New York with 36 points and 27 assists this season.
Jagr, named the NHL's second star for his play last week, has at least a point in seven straight, totaling four goals and eight assists.
On the injury front, winger Petr Prucha is questionable for tonight's game due to a sore left wrist.New York begins a three-game road trip tonight and is 7-7-4 as the visiting team this year. The Blueshirts are 1-2-2 in their last five on the road.
Calgary concludes a three-game homestand this evening and have won the first two contests of the stand. The Flames beat Anaheim on Saturday before defeating Vancouver, 2-1, Monday.
Kristian Huselius' goal late in the second period was the game-winner, and Owen Nolan also tallied for the Flames, who got 24 saves from Miikka Kiprusoff and beat Vancouver for the first time in five tries this season.
Daymond Langkow assisted on both goals.
Jarome Iginla was held without a point for just the fifth time in 14 December games. He is tied for second in the NHL with 53 points, and his 27 goals are third best in the league.
Calgary is 9-7-6 as the host this season.
