NHL Hockey Preview, The Sports Network, Buffalo Sabres host Ottawa Senators hoping to halt skid
(Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres will try to avoid extending their longest losing streak of the season to five games when they welcome the Ottawa Senators for tonight's test at HSBC Arena.
The Sabres' four-game slide has come directly after the club set a season-high with six straight victories. Buffalo is 0-2-2 during the slide, as it dropped two of the games in a shootout. Buffalo last played on New Year's Day in the Winter Classic against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidney Crosby scored on the final chance of the shootout to lift the Penguins to the 2-1 victory in the first NHL game played outdoors in the United States.
The game was played before an NHL-record crowd of 71,217 at Ralph Wilson Stadium -- home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills.
Snow fell throughout much of the contest and the temperature at game time was about 30 degrees, dropping to the high 20s late in the third period and in overtime.
The league last held an outdoor game on November 22, 2003 when Montreal played in Edmonton before a then-NHL-record crowd of 57,167.
Brian Campbell scored the lone goal for Buffalo, while Ryan Miller stopped 24 shots in defeat.Buffalo is 11-7-1 at home this season after the outdoor loss.
The Sabres will begin a three-game road trip in Atlanta on Sunday night.
The Senators are the top team in the Eastern Conference with 54 points, but will try to rebound tonight after getting swept by Washington in a home-and- home series.
Ottawa was outscored 14-9 in the two games against the Capitals, losing 8-6 at home on Saturday before getting beat by a 6-3 count on New Year's Day.
Mike Green recorded two goals and an assist, leading the Capitals to Tuesday's win at the Verizon Center.
Chris Neil and Dean McAmmond each posted a goal and an assist for the Senators.
Martin Gerber was pulled in the first period after he allowed three goals on eight shots.
Ray Emery stopped 15-of-17 shots the rest of the way.
The Senators are 13-4-2 as the host club this season and have won seven of their last nine road tests.
Ottawa will begin a four-game homestand Saturday against Tampa Bay. Ottawa has won two of three meetings with the Sabres this year and has taken seven of the last 10 encounters overall. The Sens have been defeated in five of their previous nine stops in Buffalo.
