NHL Hockey Preview, The Sports Network, Vancouver Canucks Try to Keep Home Win Streak Alive in Battle versus New York Rangers
(Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks will shoot for the fifth straight win on home ice tonight, as the club will battle the New York Rangers at General Motor Place.
Vancouver has posted a victory in four straight games as the host and in nine of the last 10.
The Canucks haven't lost in regulation at home since November 1 against Nashville, going 10-0-2 since then.
Overall, Vancouver is 11-6-2 as the home team this year.
The club was in Calgary on Monday and was handed a 2-1 setback by the Flames.
The Canucks actually led 1-0 when Daniel Sedin converted a feed from his twin brother Henrik into a goal to cap a 3-on-2 rush, but the Flames went on to net the next two goals.
For Daniel, it was his team-leading 18th goal, while Henrik is tops with 40 points and 33 assists.
Roberto Luongo gave up both goals on just 20 shots, as the Canucks lost for the second time in their last seven games.
Mattias Ohlund missed his fourth straight game due to neck spasms and is out for tonight as well.
This will be the first of two games against New York opponents for the Canucks, who lead a tight Northwest Division with 48 points.
Vancouver will get a four-day breather before hosting the Islanders next Tuesday.
The Rangers were in Calgary last night for the first time in over four years, and will skate in Vancouver for the first time since November 16, 2002.
The Canucks have won six of their last seven games against the Rangers, who have lost three straight and five of eight in Vancouver.
In fact, the Rangers haven't won in Vancouver since October of 1997.
New York was defeated by Calgary, 4-3, on Wednesday to have a three-game winning streak halted.
Michal Rozsival, Brendan Shanahan and Brandon Dubinsky all scored for the Rangers, while Henrik Lundqvist allowed four goals on 22 shots.
Scott Gomez extended his point streak to 13 games with a pair of assists.
His run is the longest active stretch in the NHL and he has four goals and 15 assists in that span.
Jaromir Jagr added two helpers to extend his points streak to eight games, second longest in the league.
He has four goals and 10 assists on his run.
New York, which is tied for second in the Atlantic Division, three points back of front-running New Jersey, lost the opener of a three-game road trip that concludes in Edmonton on Saturday.
The Blueshirts are 1-3-2 in their last six on the road and 7-8-4 overall.
