NFC Wild Card Betting Playoffs, New York Giants (10-6) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7)
Sunday, 1:00 pm Eastern – FOX
SBG Global Opening Line: Buccaneers - 3 , Total 40
The well rested Tampa Bay Buccaneers play host to the New York Giants in an NFC Wild Card playoff matchup on Sunday. The Bucs rested many of their starters the past two weeks, losing both games while the Giants played their starters in the regular season finale against the Patriots. Which approach was correct? We’ll find out on Sunday. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Buccaneers at Home.
Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia has had success in the past in the playoffs against the Giants. This will be his third start against the Giants in the playoffs and New York is not happy to see him. Last year Garcia led the Eagles to a win against the Giants. He also completed the second-biggest playoff comeback in league history in 2003 as he led the San Francisco 49ers back from a 21 point deficit to win against New York. Garcia threw for 2,440 yards, 13 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season. He had a 94.6 quarterback rating, seventh in the league. "He certainly has done an outstanding job for them. He is the guy that you have to try to do something about," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, "You have to get pressure on him; you have to contain him; you have to get up in his face. You have to do all of those kinds of things. And of course they are always trying to create opportunities for him to be able to be in a position that he can take full advantage of.” New York has the defense that may be able to stop Garcia. They led the league in sacks with 53. "It's not just the four guys up front; it's the perimeter blitz package," Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said. "They're a great overload blitzing team; you're going to see their cornerbacks have sacks, their linebacking corps has sacks, sacks are coming from all over the place. It's a credit to this scheme and to their personnel, they do an excellent job."
SBG Global Current Line: Buccaneers - 3 (+105) , Total 39.5
The question will be whether the time off for Tampa’s starters helps them or hurts them. The rest definitely should help receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard who were nursing injuries. The two combined for more than 1,700 receiving yards this season and may be able to take advantage of a New York secondary that may be missing starting cornerback Sam Madison who was injured last week against New England.
The Giants will try and finally win a playoff game on Sunday. They have lost their last four playoff games. They will need Eli Manning to play well if they are to have a chance. He has had an up and down season, throwing for 23 TD’s but also throwing 20 interceptions. The Bucs defense was second in the league in yards allowed (278.4 per game), first in passing defense (170.5) and third in points allowed (16.9). "They have veteran players and they are very sound with what they are doing," said Manning, "They don't give up big plays by mental mistakes. They are able to get a good pass rush whether they bring a blitz or just on the four-man rush. They mix up what they do enough and they are very sound and disciplined in their technique and in their coverage.”
New York will be missing tight end Jeremy Shockey who is out with a broken leg. The status of Madison, along with center Shaun O'Hara and linebacker Kawika Mitchell is up in the air. The Giants and Bucs have never met in the playoffs. New York leads the all-time series 10-6. Tampa Bay is 5-4 against New York at home.
