MLS Soccer Preview, The Sports Network, United goalkeeper headed to Valerenga

Washington, D.C.(Sports Network) - In a move that has been in the works for weeks, D.C. United goalkeeper Troy Perkins will transfer to Norwegian first division club Valerenga after the Major League Soccer club agreed to the transfer Thursday.
"Troy developed into one of the top goalkeepers in MLS during the past four years and it is no surprise that his services are in demand overseas," United general manager Dave Kasper told the Washington Times.
United will get two-thirds of the unspecified transfer fee paid by Valerenga for MLS's 2006 Goalkeeper of the Year.
Perkins is expected to get a considerable raise from the $85,000 he earned in '07 at United.
The 26-year-old joined D.C. in 2004, making 16 starts that season before playing in only two games the following year. After claiming the starting spot from Nick Rimando in 2006, he earned the league's top goalkeeping award while also helping lead the club to the Supporter's Shield. This past season, Perkins played 29 games to help United claim its second consecutive Supporter's Shield. In 77 career starts at United, Perkins earned a 36-19-22 record.
In a move made to prepare for Perkins departure, United acquired goalkeeper Zach Wells from the Houston Dynamo in a trade for defender Bobby Boswell last month.
