College Basketball Preview, The Sports Network, No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels opens ACC slate at No. 19 Clemson Tigers
Clemson, SC (Sports Network) - The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels take their game on the road as they battle the 19th-ranked Clemson Tigers in ACC action.
North Carolina has been atop the AP poll for nine straight weeks, the longest such stretch for the program since 1986. The Tar Heels are a perfect 14-0, and all but three of the wins have come by double figures. They were most recently in action on Wednesday when they knocked off Kent State in a 90-61 final.
Clemson has won two straight games to fall to 12-1 overall, and the team is a perfect 7-0 at home. The Tigers managed to knock off Alabama on the road on New Year's Day, 87-61, and while the non-conference schedule has been rather soft, there have been a few impressive wins along the way.
North Carolina owns a commanding 118-19 series lead over Clemson, including six straight wins over the Tigers.
Tyler Hansbrough has been the leading scorer for UNC in 10 of the 14 games played, and he has been tops in rebounding 10 times as well. The All-American power forward is currently averaging 22.4 ppg and 9.6 rpg, and he is shooting 58.5 percent from the floor. Hansbrough has connected on 113-of-138 free-throw attempts, tremendous volume and accuracy for 14 games. Wayne Ellington is posting 16.7 ppg for the Tar Heels on the strength of his 40.3 percent shooting from behind the arc. UNC is also getting 13.0 ppg from Ty Lawson and 12.9 ppg from Danny Green. The Tar Heels are racking up 92.2 ppg on 50.3 percent overall shooting, and they are holding foes to 68.6 ppg on 40.9 percent shooting. In the romp over Kent State last time out, North Carolina connected on 52.3 percent of its field goal attempts and limited the Golden Flashes to 39.7 percent shooting. The Heels also earned a 40-30 rebounding advantage.
K.C. Rivers is the leading scorer for Clemson, as he is netting 16.0 ppg to go along with 7.3 rpg. Terrence Oglesby checks in with 12.5 ppg, and James Mays is contributing 12.3 ppg. The fourth and final double-digit scorer on the roster is Cliff Hammonds with 10.2 ppg. The Tigers are averaging 82.0 ppg on the strength of their 40.7 percent shooting from three-point range, and they are holding their opponents to just 64.8 ppg. Strong rebounding has been key to Clemson's success, as it is pulling down nine rebounds per game more than the opposition. The Tigers connected on 53.6 percent of their field goal attempts in the blowout victory over Alabama. They limited the Crimson Tide to 39.7 percent shooting and earned a 42-29 rebounding advantage. Mays and Trevor Booker scored 18 points apiece, and Oglesby added 17 points for Clemson.
