College Basketball Preview, The Sports Network, 21st-ranked Arizona Wildcats Hosts Oregon State Beavers in Pac-10 Opener
Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - The 21st-ranked Arizona Wildcats and Oregon State Beavers kick off their Pac-10 schedules against one another this evening at the McKale Center in Tucson.
The Wildcats brought a six-game win streak into the final game of the calendar year, but at less than full strength, where unable to keep the streak alive, falling to second-ranked Memphis on the road last weekend, 76-63.
The Wildcats are certainly one of the better teams in the Pac-10 and hope to improve on a down year in 2006, one that saw the team go 11-7 in league play. The Beavers finished just out of the basement in the conference standings last season (3-15) and early indications are the team will
once again struggle in league play. OSU enters this contest off back-to-back losses, dropping a road game at LSU (67-61), followed by a one-point heartbreaker at home to Montana State (60-59).
Arizona holds a significant edge in the all-time series (46-17) and has won 13 of the last 15 meetings with Oregon State. There were 13 lead changes in Corvallis this past weekend, but in the end the Beavers were on the wrong end of a one-point decision. Oregon State was outscored in the paint, 38-28 and turned the ball over 14 times in the setback. C.J. Giles and Marcel Jones led the way with 13 points each, while Josh Tarver added 11 points and six assists. Offensive consistency has plagued this team, as they enter this game dead last in the Pac-10 in scoring at 63.8 ppg. The Beavers are shooting just over 40 percent from the floor (.403), including a mere .305 from behind the arc. The poor shooting has even carried over to the free-throw line, with the Beavers ranking last in the conference from the charity stripe as well (.636). Seth Tarver and Jones have been the only real offensive commodities to date, averaging 14.5 and 13.4 ppg, respectively. Tarver is the team's top outside shooter at .422 from long range. Jones leads the way on the glass with 7.5 rpg.
Even at 100-percent, Arizona would have had a tough time in Memphis this past weekend. However, without standout freshman Jerryd Bayless (knee) and fellow starter Bret Brielmaier (shoulder) in the lineup, the Wildcats were fighting an uphill battle. the result was one of the lowest scoring outputs of the season. The team went without a field goal over a 12-minute stretch in the first half and was unable to recover. Chase Budinger had a solid outing, scoring a team-high 20 points, to go along with six rebounds. Jordan Hill added 14 points, followed by Nic Wise's 12 in his first career start. There is no timetable on Bayless' return and the team will
certainly miss his 18.5 ppg. Everyone else will need to step up in Bayless' absence. Those likely to do so are Budinger (16.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg), Hill (13.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Jawann McClellan (8.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg).
